Factors contributing to mass psychosis:

Loneliness and isolation
Lack of meaning in life or work
Free floating anxiety where they can’t pinpoint how to make it stop and the mainstream narrative tells them what to do as a collective
Frustration and aggression directed at those who will not comply

By sacrificing and participating in the ritual, the individual shows the collective is more important than the individual. The ritual must be a behavior that is without pragmatic meaning, that has no advantages, and that forces people to sacrifice something. For a certain percentage of the population, it makes no difference whether the measures are absurd or dangerous.
